{"id":555,"date":"2008-05-14T09:26:03","date_gmt":"2008-05-13T23:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.counsellingconnection.com\/index.php\/2008\/05\/14\/what-is-bullying\/"},"modified":"2016-04-22T10:16:04","modified_gmt":"2016-04-22T00:16:04","slug":"what-is-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.counsellingconnection.com\/index.php\/2008\/05\/14\/what-is-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Bullying?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Victorian Education Department bullying is defined as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&lsquo;when someone, or a group of people, who have more power at the time, deliberately upset or hurt another person, their property, reputation or social acceptance on more than one occasion.&rsquo;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Understanding bullying becomes clearer when we identify examples from the 3 categories of bullying behaviour, as outlined by Lawson (1995). It is important to remember that the behaviour is not considered bullying if it is an isolated incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Direct Physical Bullying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This includes, but is not limited to hitting, tripping, pushing, taking possessions or damaging property.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Direct Verbal Bullying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Direct verbal bullying can include name calling, offensive, threatening and insultive remarks. Topics may include homophobic and racist remarks, highlighting special needs or verbal abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indirect Bullying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This form of bullying is harder to recognise and is often carried out behind the bullied student&rsquo;s back.
