Here&#8217;s a four-step framework you can follow:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifying your current skills, qualities and attitudes<\/li>\n<li>Goal setting to develop skills<\/li>\n<li>Developing your confidence in self-promotion<\/li>\n<li>Outlining your preferred work environments<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Skills, Qualities and Attitudes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, the list below is broken into three categories &mdash; skills, qualities and attitudes. Look at the list and check that you understand what each one is.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Highlight or tick the ones you already have.<\/li>\n<li>Put a cross beside any that definitely aren&rsquo;t important or relevant to your area of work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Skills<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Able to prioritise<br \/>\nBook keeping<br \/>\nBrick laying<br \/>\nCarpentry<br \/>\nCommunication skills- oral and listening<br \/>\nCommunication skills &mdash; written<br \/>\nChair person<br \/>\nComputer-keyboard<br \/>\nCross cultural understanding and awareness<br \/>\nDatabase<br \/>\nDriving<br \/>\nEnglish language<br \/>\nExcel &mdash; spreadsheet<br \/>\nFiling<br \/>\nFencing<br \/>\nGood with people<br \/>\nGrammar and spelling<br \/>\nGraphic design<br \/>\nMicrosoft word<br \/>\nMinute taking<br \/>\nNetworking<br \/>\nOffice management<br \/>\nOperate equipment and machinery<br \/>\nPlumbing<br \/>\nPublic speaking<br \/>\nReceptionist<br \/>\nSales<br \/>\nShearing\/crutching<br \/>\nSupervising staff<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Qualities<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ambitious<br \/>\nBright personality<br \/>\nCompassionate<br \/>\nConsiderate creative<br \/>\nEfficient<br \/>\nFair<br \/>\nGenerous<br \/>\nGet on well with others<br \/>\nGets the job done<br \/>\nGood team player<br \/>\nHonest<br \/>\nKind leadership<br \/>\nLoyal<br \/>\nOrganised<br \/>\nPays attention to detail<br \/>\nPeople person<br \/>\nProductive<br \/>\nReliable<br \/>\nResponsible<br \/>\nSense of humor<br \/>\nThoughtful<br \/>\nWell groomed<br \/>\nWell spoken<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Attitude<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Caring<br \/>\nEasy to get on with<br \/>\nEnjoys work<br \/>\nEnthusiastic<br \/>\nFriendly<br \/>\nHelpful<br \/>\nIndustrious<br \/>\nLoving<br \/>\nMotivated positive<br \/>\nPassionate<br \/>\nResponsible<br \/>\nSafety conscious<br \/>\nRespectful<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To-Do<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make a list of all the skills an employer will want in any job you go for (the ads in the paper will help with this).<\/li>\n<li>Make a list of skills that you do not currently have, but would like to develop in the near future.<\/li>\n<li>For each skill you would like to develop, list one or two ways you could learn or practice those skills and the name of anyone who could assist you with this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote><p>E.g. Computer skills<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Do a course or get a &lsquo;teach yourself typing&rsquo; program<\/li>\n<li>Practice at the library or community center<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The 2 Minute Role Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2 minute role play can help you in two ways:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop your confidence when you are talking about your skills and abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Start to improve your interviewing skills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Ask a family member or a friend to be the interviewer in this role play. The scenario should be as following:<\/p>\n<p>The interview has just started. The opening question by the interviewer is &ldquo;Tell me about yourself.&rdquo; Try to talk about yourself for 2 minutes. You should try to include the following topics:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Career goals and interests<\/li>\n<li>Your accomplishments and qualifications<\/li>\n<li>Your work values<\/li>\n<li>Your recent work experience<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can discuss these topics in any order, but try to include something about all 4 points. When you are finished, ask your interviewer the following questions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Q1. Was my story interesting?<br \/>\nQ2. Was it convincing?<br \/>\nQ3. Was anything left out?<br \/>\nQ4. How could I make my response better?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Have a think about the feedback you received.
